what is the best way to store text data

    we are going to try and convert a legacy mainframe application for tracking problems and change requests to sql server.

    what is the best way to store large amounts of text data so that they can be quickly and easily searched?

    we routinely do searches in the current system by keywords, title, phrases, etc. to see if a problem has been seen before but the system is very slow.

    Storing in a text column and using the Full Text Search engine does quite well. However depending on the amount of data building the Full Text index can take awhile so keep that in mind. See BOL for more info.
