best strategy for creating/sharing meta info

  • I am part of a development team in a school district. The district uses sql2000 for it's data system - however the tables and dbs are a disorganized mess based on many years of evolution, modification and legacy connections.

We need to implement an effective system for sharing information about DBs, Tables, Columns - the tool would enable perhaps a group-network access Blog-ish system of inputting questions, definitions and comments on any SQL data element. The tool would of course automatically make available the data elements and db/table architecture for commentary. It could show the dbs as treelists and selecting an item would bring up the blog/comments.

I can code this - but don't want to if this is something that already exists in some fashion. Eg., some sort of integration component with MSProject would be ideal - or something else off the shelf.

Any ideas, strategies, thoughts much appreciated.

  • Depending on your security requirements for viewing of the METADATA the REPOSITORY features that comes with SQL Server 2k may be all you need.  Otherwise you may have to look around for the right tool extending the repository.

Check out the work going on in the XMLA space.  Perhaps one of these consultants can help you with your needs.

Personally, I think this local vendor http://www.aspirity.com/ is probably your best contact for handling your problem set.  So much depends on your specific scenarios and requirements of your organization that I'd hate to give you a tool recommendation without some analysis.
