120-day Evaluation Copy and Service Packs

  • I'm interested in using the 120 day evaluation copy of SQL

Server 2000 for a client and would like to apply the

latest service pack on top. However, I remember someone

once saying that the MSDN version should be used rather

than the evaluation one because of incompatibilities -

unfortunately I didn't ask him to specify them, so does

anyone else have info/experience of this? Thanks in

    advance.

  • The only thing I remember is you cannot apply any service pack to the evaluation version. Don't know about hot fixes but I believe they did not work as well. Finally as long as you meet the licensing requirement or you client does for MSDE 2000 it is works great with minor limitations.

However the statement about using the MSDN copy, there are many stipulations with MSDN that can get you it a good amount of trouble. It is not an evaluation version, it is for testing only, just be sure what the limitations are before you make a mistake.

  • Thanks - that's what I had heard and it's nice to have it confirmed.
