convert to SQL2005

  • I am trying to come up with a plan to convert to SQL2005. Have lots of replication job and DTS packages. Can someone give advice the best plan for conversion.

    Thank you

  • If you plan to do it yourself, my main piece of advice is do it in a test environment first.

Use some form of source control, and script any database changes you need. That way, when you're ready to do the real conversion, you can do it much more easily.

I also recommend a side-by-side upgrade instead of an in-place upgrade. That way, if you have to roll back at the last minute, it's a lot easier.

  • If it's an option I would recommend to move to 2K8 instead of 2K5.

Keep in mind that mainstream support for 2K5 will end in less then a month (4/12/2011).
