Use of USB connected harddrive for log or data files -- OK to do ?

  • In response to low space on internal harddrives problem, I moved some log and data files to a new HD letter that is USB provisioned. Am I safe in doing this ?

Using SS 2000 stardard. Mixed sized multiple databases on a single instance, adn an old server.

Am I looking for troubles by using USB connected hard drives for other than archiving old bak files ?

    Thanks, Rick

  • Yes, you are looking for trouble - especially if this is a production system. You really need to add storage to the system or figure out what can be deleted/removed from the system to free up available space.

  • Yes, it is production, and I did not know these 3 drives were USB connected, until I started to do some trial restores since these are the only drives with much space.

    Ugh !

Thanks for your time to reply and advise. Rick
