Things Move Fast

I have several things I’d like to say in the editorial today, but I feel I have to start off with my condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II. For that matter, my condolences to the people of Britain. This truly is the end of an era.

Things do indeed move fast sometimes.

Working for a software company, you had better be prepared to embrace change. With multiple development teams (and some pretty amazing developers on them too), and multiple products, I sometimes feel like my job is simply trying to keep up with all the new releases.

I’ll bet, even if you don’t work directly with creating software, your job moves fast too. Business needs are constantly changing as a reflection of the general shifts and moves of populations and interests of people. Then you may also have to keep up with changing government regulations and the interpretation and enforcement of those regulations. Not to mention, those crazy people making software (Hi!) are always releasing updates. Technology itself is constantly shifting.

No one of these things is overwhelming, but collectively they can drive you to despair. Now, I’m not about to tell you, don’t worry, here’s an easy solution, or anything like that. I’m right there with you. Sometimes I just stand slack jawed and wonder how on earth I can keep up. The only thing I can say is, carry on as best you can.

Almost makes me British.

Once more, I am sorry for the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. Love or hate the monarchy, a human, who clearly did her best to be a good person, has passed on. We’re all a little diminished every time that happens, regardless of who that human is.

Improving the Quality of Data Governance: Where to Start?

How do we set about improving the quality of data governance within an organization? What are the priorities? Data Governance is generally considered to mean providing clear roles, responsibilities, policies, principles, and organizational structures that can ensure that data is managed well, in a way that benefits the whole organization. Where do you start?

Data Governance: Joining the Dots

Every organization must perform data governance. This requires planning, oversight, and control over the management, security, resilience and quality of data and over the use of data by the organization. In larger organizations, it can be a complex task. William Brewer explains what's involved.
