I just started at a new company with around 45 servers and I've been asked to create documentation on both the Windows 2000 Servers themselves as well as the SQL Servers.
Does anyone have a set of sprocs they like to use for SQL Documentation? I've searched the site and found some great ones, just seeing if anyone else would like to add their favorite way to document important info or just offer advise on this topic. Or is there a tool everyone likes for this. I checked out SQL Analyzer. Any others or thoughts on SQL Analyzer?
Also, does anyone have any method of auditing the Windows Server itself for information you could share? Or a good tool? Thanks.

Agreed that there are some excellent scripts on this site for doing this. Check BOL on the subject of the sqldiag.exe utility that ships with SQL Server 2000 and is a great starting point. It runs fairly quickly and will provide a lot of system information as well as comprehensive information regarding the SQL Server installation and configuration. It should be in your mssql\binn folder and when run will produce a text file that you can use to cut and paste into word or excel.
As to general system and Windows documentation utilities, I checked out Ecora's Enterprise Auditor last year and can say that it is a pretty good product. You can download a free trial from their site but I think you're limited on the amount of servers you can register in the trial version to like 5 or 10. Unfortunately, my company didn't want to pay for the full version, so I'm no longer using it. What I really liked about this product is it gave a comprehensive listing of patches and service packs with an explanation of the vulnerability being addressed as well as a lot of other really detailed information. (My manager saw the reports generated from these was really impressed. He thought I spent hours and hours gathering this info )
If you have Compaq/HP servers, they have an excellent Survey utility that will provide a lot of detailed system information as well. You can find this in the Essentials Foundation Pack CD's that ship with the servers or I believe you can also obtain it from http://www.hp.com as well as instructions on installing and running it. Hope this helps.
