Are the posted questions getting worse?

I think a small black hole might improve the system that Grant's ranting about.

I'd say a large magnet might help them (move on)

So you've been in my office this morning, have you?

Everyone's mad that I started kicking people out of the reporting databases this morning because stuff hadn't finished. Now they want to know when it'll finish and they don't seem to understand that it'll be done faster if they stop querying against the database that's trying to update itself while it's doing the updates... Sigh.

I do wonder if on days like that it'll just be easier to blanket DENY everyone access to objects on the database (or disable the users) apart from the user that is building the data. At least then they can't slow it down (as much) by running queries that will more than likely be wrong anyway.

  • You know, I didn't think about disabling the users... I should consider that for the next time.

  • So, the end of this month the wife and I are going to a Science Fiction / Fantasy / Comic Book / Anime convention.  One of the guests is going to be Famke Jannsen (she played Jean Grey in the first 3 X-Men movies, Xenia Onatopp in GoldenEye, and a few others.)  I'm thinking of taking along a movie she was in for an autograph, but I'm thinking not one of her better known roles...

No, I'm thinking instead of taking along Deep Rising...

Mostly because I'm weird like that, and partly because frankly, it's a fun movie.  And, partly because I'm hoping to get a reaction along the lines of "oh god, someone remembered I was in that!"

Hope the queue isn't too long! I remember some friends queuing for 4 or 5 hours for Vic Mignogna's autograph an a convention. >_<

When we went last year, I think we spent maybe an hour in line for John Barrowman.  That includes the time it took for him to serenade a woman dressed up as the Queen of England and get everyone in line to form up behind them for a selfie.

I lean towards disabling items when I'm unsure of impact or need. I'd pre-write the "enable" scripts so I could get them going quickly if needed.

I talked to the manager of the team in question. He's going to draw up a list of SLAs and expectations so we can have a more constructive discussion after month end.

I love this guy. He's great at understanding that our problems are his problems because he knows we treat his problems as our problems. Cooperation, yay!

I expanded this into a full blog post. Comes out a little after 10. Yes, DBCC TIMEWARP is mentioned, but no, it's not the "Run Really Fast" button.

I suspect that "run really fast button" is the short form of the name.   It's really the "maybe run really fast and probably deliver incorrect results and corrupt your database" button.

So the short, short, short version would be "WITH NOLOCK"?

  • So our person who is the lead person on the help desk is helping with some testing of one of our websites. This person ran into an issue with a page. I asked them for a link and they sent me a screenshot of the address bar. Since this is a CMS the links are user friendly but can get quite lengthy and extremely difficult to type. Shouldn't somebody running the help desk understand what a link is from a website?

I would hope so, but apparently you and I both expect too much.  When people at work send me pictures of text instead of the text itself, I kick it back to them and ask for the actual text instead of a picture of it.  I then let it go because it isn't worth typing some pile of text and running the risk of fat-fingering something that just isn't necessary.

And when I said "Oh I thought you would send me a link instead of screenshot" the response was "well how would I know what kind of link you wanted". Seriously??? I don't know...a link that is actually a link so I don't have to type it, you don't have to take a screenshot and makes it easy for...well...anybody who needs this information. Frustrating when the help desk can't tell the different between a cd player and a cup holder. I realize I am asking for a lot but perhaps a person in a technical position could have the very basic concepts of working with technology. Topped it off by sending me a picture and then calling to tell me they sent me an email...which of course hadn't made it to my inbox yet because it had a 4MB screenshot attached to it.

Got to give you kudos, your dedication to try and help that user is commendable; I certainly wouldn't have had the patience after the amount of pictures they've supplied. 😎
