I have a couple of questions regarding maintenance plans. How offten should I reindex and rebuild statistics? As it stands now, we run our plans once a month, one day for indexes and the next for statistics. This was in place before I was hired. Also we are not running the consistency checks when the plans are run. My last question, defrag? Do you use it? If so, the built in one or thrid party?
Thanks for looking,
Bart

Index maintenance depends on your level of activity (insert, update delete). The more it happens, the more often you run this. I've typically run this weekly.
defrag - Do you mean OS level? I have used both, depending on budget

Steve,
Thanks for your reply. I will have to look into this deeper to see if I have to run my Index maintenace more often.

Generally speaking, we reindex every week and update statistics once a day. Reindexing automatically updates statistics, so there is little value in updating once a month the day after the reindex.

John,
Thanks for the info. I thought reindexing updated statistics, but wasnt sure. As you can tell I am no DBA, but I am learning however painful it may be. We have 4 servers with about 30 DBs each, but one has 90 on it. I have to get these maintenace plans sorted out.
